Low Country Calm: As I move through my work in 2026, I find myself leaning more deeply into the idea of calm. We all have places that seem to instantly lower our blood pressure—the coast, the mountains, the quiet edges of nature. I’ve been asking myself what the real alchemy is behind that feeling. What are the elements that allow a landscape to settle the nervous system?
For me, it’s the fading glow of sunset dissolving into the horizon. The way light reflects and softens across the surface of still water. The silhouettes of distant trees standing quietly along the marsh edge. The hush that settles into the Lowcountry as evening arrives.
Low Country Calm is inspired by the coastal marshlands of Eastern Carolina, but it isn’t meant to be a single place on a map. Instead, it’s a collection of sensory moments—the violet sky, the gentle movement of tidal water, the soft haze of atmosphere—woven together to create a feeling rather than a location.
A central theme in my work is the belief that art can have a physical impact on the viewer. I want my paintings to slow the breath, lower the blood pressure, and invite a moment of stillness in an otherwise busy world. When the light fades in the studio, this piece seems to hold its own quiet glow, like the last lingering light of day resting on the marsh.
My hope is that when you spend time with it, you feel the same sense of calm that inspired it.
